FTD, also called frontotemporal dementia or frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), is a disease process that causes a group of brain disorders characterized by changes in behavior and personality, language and/or motor skills, and a deterioration in a person's ability to function. The AFTD provides information about FTD to patients, families, physicians and other health care providers, and promotes and funds research. The Comstock Caregiver Respite Program is a grant program to help full-time, unpaid or family caregivers living with someone diagnosed with frontotemporal degeneration pay for short-term, daytime or overnight respite care. To apply caregivers must submit a simple application along with medical records documenting how the diagnosis of FTD was made. Once approved, caregiver arranges respite care and submits receipts or documentation to AFTD for reimbursement up to the total grant amount of $500. AFTD will work with applicants to obtain the documentation needed to qualify for a grant and request reimbursements. Once approved, caregivers may re-apply for one $500 grant per AFTD's fiscal year, without submitting any additional medical records, for as long as respite care is needed.
